Trees planted under Queen's Green Canopy Jubilee initiative

Thu 24 Mar 2022

Nine trees have been planted by the Vale Douzaine as part of its contribution to the Queen's Green Canopy, an initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

The mix of apple and pear species plus a willow have been planted in the field immediately behind the Vale Douzaine room and it is hoped that they will provide a lasting memory of the Jubilee celebrations.

The original suggestion came from a parishioner who uses the space there regularly to exercise his dog.

Constables Richard Leale and Bill Cohu endorsed the idea because the field has been left as a semi-wild area to encourage wildlife including birds, insects and wildflowers and the fruit trees seemed a suitable addition to that.

Mr Leale said that the douzaine hoped that residents at neighbouring La Nouvelle Maraitaine would be able to enjoy the enhanced area and a couple of benches have also been installed to help people enjoy the space.

"It belongs to the parish so we would love for it to be used as much as possible," he said.

  • The field and adjoining former quarry at the Douzaine rooms are available for everyone to enjoy, not just parishoners.
