Hougue Jehannet road closure hearing delayed

Thu 05 Oct 2023

A court hearing scheduled for Monday to decide whether Hougue Jehannet, the road behind the power station, should close permanently has been delayed, the Vale Douzaine has been told.

Vale junior constable Bill Cohu at the North Side end of Hougue Jehannet. It has been closed ‘temporarily’ for three years, and now Guernsey Electricity wants to make that closure permanent.

The Royal Court was to hear an application for closure, requested on security grounds by Guernsey Electricity Ltd, on the 9th but this has been postponed for procedural issues, Senior Constable Richard Leale has been informed by officials.

No alternative date for the hearing has been given. However, the new one will be published by the douzaine when it has been informed of the alternative day.

A request by GEL to close the road, which links North Side with Summerfield Road and is used as a diversion when Vale Avenue is closed, has proved controversial and an old law, the Ordonnance Générale rélative aux Routes, Rues et Chemins of 1840, has been invoked to try to obtain the required legal permissions.

When the heading does go ahead, the douzaine will present a report to the court on representations it has heard regarding closure.
