Parish views wanted on Bridge enhancement project

Wed 06 Dec 2023

Vale parishioners are being encouraged to complete a survey that will help inform new proposals about how the whole Bridge area could be improved – from road signage to housing development or new marinas.

The area in scope for the harbour action area

This follows the States creating the Guernsey Development Agency to consider and propose potential developments along Guernsey's East Coast, between the Aquarium and Salerie Corner and between Longue Hougue and the Vale Castle.

The States is preparing a Local Planning Brief for the St Peter Port and St Sampson Harbour Action Areas. Once approved next year, the brief will set the planning policies guiding the sort of development along the East coast. The Guernsey Development Agency has been asked to provide input into the early stages of the preparation of the Local Planning Brief for the Harbour Action Areas and would like to hear the public’s views on what they think should be prioritised, so that these ideas can be fed into the formal process of preparing the Local Planning Brief.

Improvements
The survey gives an idea of the sort of improvements that might be considered and Senior Constable Richard Leale urged people in the North of the island to complete it. "I think it's very important for as many people as possible to complete the survey so the GDA and the States know what people think about the area in which they live, work or shop and the sort of improvements that would make people's lives better," he said.

"That has to be more helpful than people in offices coming up with what they think is needed – real-world experience should ideally be informing this process."

He expected that the Vale Douzaine and that of St Sampson's would be closely involved in the DGA's plans and said that the parishes would monitor progress with interest. "We've been pressing for the Leale's Yard development, and the enhancements that will provide, for a long time," said Mr Leale.

"Getting some benefits beyond that would be a logical phase two so I hope people will take the time to have their say."
